Sam Mendes said no to James Bond
2013 March 13
James Bond will soon be back as usual, Sam Mendes however will not. The Skyfall’s director told about this and many other things in his interview to Empire magazine. That way Sam Mendes put an end to the rumors that went in the press for several months.
“The decision not to accept Michael’s and Barbara’s proposition was a really difficult one – Sais Sam, - Filming Skyfall was one of the best experiences in my career but I’m also responsible for several theatrical productions including "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "King Lear" that will require all of my attention in the coming year.”
"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is a musical that Mendes is directing in the London’s West End Theater and "King Lear" is a play that Mendes is also working on in Royal National Theatre. Both premiers will take place in 2014, so there’s really not that much time to waste.
Skyfall has become the highest grossing movie in the entire fifty-year history of James Bond films. The picture grossed $ 1.1 billion taking the seventh place in the list of the highest grossing films of all time.
The thing about Sam Mendes and his cooperation with Bond movies is that he doesn’t deny the probability of returning to the franchise. “I’m very proud of being a part of Bond family – Sais Mendes – I hope that some day I will have the opportunity to work with this wonderful people again.”
Bond’s producers, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli comment on the situation: “We were very lucky and pleased to work with Sam and he made us the most successful Bond movie. We would gladly give him the director’s chair for the next Bond movie but respect his decision to concentrate on other projects and hope that we’ll have the opportunity to work together in the future.”
So who’s the director of the new 007 movie? It became known that Rupert Wyatt who was supposed to direct the new Denzel Washington movie called "The Equalizer" has leaved his director’s chair. And as far as we know, there is no coincidence when it comes to James Bond.
